Carl Louis Mortison (ca. 1895-1963)
Carl Louis Mortison, North American satirical illustrator, studied at the Lockwood Art School in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Throughout his professional career, which began around 1912, he collaborated weekly as a political illustrator with the newspaper The Waterbury (CT) Republican American. Although he signed the majority of his drawings as Mort, he was also known by the pseudonym Lester Green. A committed author, in 1957 he created an exposition of drawings for the American Civil Liberties Union that would travel the United States.
His work was infused with the finest style of political criticism and reflected day to day events both timelessly and without cultural boundaries.
Our thanks to the Word & Image Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Yale University Library.
